“Every bottle holds a story – a memory, a moment, a piece of identity.”

Can you tell us a bit about your background and where you’re from?
My name is Mohammed Al Khouri, and I’m from Abu Dhabi. I’m proud to be one of the first perfume collectors and bloggers in the UAE. My passion for perfumes started when I was just 8 years old, and it has been a major part of my life ever since. Over the years, I’ve developed a deep understanding of the world of perfumery not only as a collector but also as someone who truly appreciates the art and stories behind each fragrance. This journey has allowed me to connect with others who share the same love, and I continue to explore and document perfumes with genuine passion.

What is your educational background, and has it influenced your passion for perfumes in any way?
While my passion for perfume isn’t tied to any formal education, it has always been a personal journey of curiosity, discovery, and deep appreciation. I’ve spent years exploring the world of fragrances – reading, experiencing, collecting, and connecting with experts and creators. Everything I know about perfume comes from genuine interest and hands-on experience, which I believe is one of the most enriching ways to truly understand this art.

When did your interest in perfumes first begin?
My interest in perfumes began when I was just 8 years old. I still remember being fascinated by how a scent could capture a memory, a feeling, or even a personality. From that young age, I started exploring different fragrances, collecting samples, and asking questions. What began as simple curiosity quickly turned into a deep passion. One that continues to grow with every new discovery.

How did you transition from being a perfume enthusiast to a serious collector?
The transition happened naturally over time. What started as a personal passion grew into something much deeper. As I explored more fragrances, I found myself not just wearing them but studying their stories, compositions, and creators. I began to seek out rare pieces, discontinued gems, and niche releases that spoke to me on a different level. With every bottle I added to my collection, I realized I wasn’t just collecting perfumes, I was preserving moments, emotions, and histories. That’s when I knew this was more than a hobby; it was a lifelong pursuit.

Do you remember the first perfume you ever bought or received?
Yes, I remember it very clearly. The first perfume I ever received was Versace Jeans (often referred to as Versus Blue Jeans for men), gifted to me by my parents. I was very young at the time, but that scent left a strong impression on me. It had this vibrant, slightly spicy character with a fresh, woody base that felt both playful and confident something that instantly fascinated me. Looking back, that gift was more than just a fragrance; it was the spark that lit my lifelong passion for perfumery. I still consider it a milestone in my journey.

What was the moment you realized this would become more than just a hobby?
There wasn’t one single moment. It was more of a gradual realization. Over the years, I found myself dedicating more time, energy, and emotion to discovering perfumes, connecting with others in the community, and curating my collection with intention. I began receiving messages from people asking for recommendations, sharing their stories, or simply wanting to learn more. That’s when it hit me that this wasn’t just a hobby anymore. It had become a meaningful part of my identity and something I truly wanted to invest in, not just for myself but for others who share the same passion.

How many perfumes do you currently have in your collection?
At the moment, my collection includes over 30,000 perfumes – a number that even surprises me sometimes. Each piece holds a story, whether it’s a rare vintage, a limited edition, or a scent that simply captured a moment in time. For me, it’s not just about quantity, but about the emotional and artistic value behind every bottle. My collection is a reflection of years of passion, exploration, and a deep appreciation for the world of perfumery.

What would you say is the rarest or most valuable perfume you own?
One of the rarest and most meaningful perfumes in my collection is Dar Zayed by Henry Jacques. It’s not only a rare creation by a prestigious house, but what makes it truly invaluable is its story it was crafted as a tribute to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE. To me, this perfume holds deep national and emotional significance. It’s more than a scent; it’s a symbol of heritage, legacy, and pride.

Do you specialize in any particular types or families of scents—like oud, florals, or orientals?
Yes, I naturally gravitate toward oud and oriental fragrances. There’s something deeply captivating about their richness, complexity, and the way they evolve over time. Oud, in particular, holds a special place in my heart not just for its scent, but for its cultural depth and emotional resonance. Oriental compositions, with their warm, spicy, and resinous layers, also speak to me on a personal level. These families of scents feel timeless and soulful, and they continue to inspire me every day.

How do you source rare or limited-edition fragrances?
Sourcing rare or limited-edition fragrances is a mix of passion, patience, and networking. Over the years, I’ve built strong relationships with collectors, boutique owners, and industry insiders around the world. I also keep a close eye on private auctions, niche perfumeries, and vintage markets. Sometimes, it takes years to find a specific piece but that’s part of the thrill. It’s not just about owning the fragrance; it’s about the story behind how it was found and the journey it took to become part of my collection.

Have you ever created or customized a perfume of your own?
Yes, I’ve worked on a few customized perfumes in collaboration with niche houses and perfumers. While I haven’t officially launched a personal fragrance, I enjoy the creative process of blending notes that reflect specific emotions, memories, or cultural elements. It’s something I take seriously and may explore further in the future.

What do you look for when evaluating a new perfume release?
I pay attention to the quality of ingredients, the creativity in the composition, and how well the scent evolves over time. For me, a great perfume tells a story. It should feel original, emotionally resonant, and well-crafted from the first spray to the dry-down.

How do you stay updated with the latest launches in the perfume industry?
I stay connected through brand newsletters, industry insiders, social media platforms, and close relationships with boutique owners and perfumers. I also follow international events and niche forums where collectors and enthusiasts exchange updates and opinions.

What are your top five favorite perfumes of all time, and why?
It’s always difficult to choose just five, but a few standouts in my collection are:
Creed – Aventus: A classic that performs exceptionally well in heat and leaves a bold, lasting impression.
Ginger by Widian: A unique blend that combines freshness and depth, and it reacts beautifully with high temperatures.
Bois Impérial by Essential Parfums: Modern, woody, and vibrant. It comes alive on the skin, especially in warmer climates.
I tend to favor perfumes that resist heat and actually perform better with it those that evolve beautifully under the sun and remain present throughout the day.

Do you follow or collaborate with any perfume houses, brands, or perfumers?
Yes, I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with several niche and luxury houses offering feedback, curating content, or simply sharing my honest impressions. I also maintain close connections with a few perfumers whose work I deeply admire.

How important is presentation and bottle design in your assessment of a perfume?
Presentation definitely matters. It reflects the brand’s identity and attention to detail. While the scent itself is the most important, a beautiful bottle enhances the overall experience and makes the perfume feel even more special—especially for collectors like myself.

What’s your full-time profession, and does it intersect with your fragrance passion in any way?
I prefer to keep my professional life separate, but my passion for fragrance naturally influences everything I do. Whether it’s the way I express myself, connect with others, or approach creativity, perfume has become part of who I am.

Do you display your perfumes in a particular way or store them in a special setup?
Yes, I’ve created what I like to call a perfume library. Each bottle is carefully arranged and displayed, not just for storage but as part of a visual and olfactory experience. I take pride in how they’re lined up almost like books on a shelf—where every fragrance has its own place and presence.

Have you traveled to specific countries or cities just to explore perfume boutiques or meet perfumers?
Yes, one of the most memorable trips was to Oman, where I had the chance to explore the Amouage factory in depth. It was an incredible experience. I got to witness firsthand how they age their perfumes and maintain such high standards in every step of production. The attention to detail and craftsmanship truly deepened my appreciation for the art of perfumery.

Which destination has been the most memorable for your fragrance journey, and why?
Oman stands out because of its deep-rooted perfumery heritage. But I’ve also had meaningful fragrance experiences in Paris, Milan, and Istanbul, each offering unique perspectives and creative inspiration.

Are there any perfume events, expos, or conventions you frequently attend?
Yes, I regularly attend Beautyworld Dubai and Esxence in Milan. These events are essential for staying ahead in the fragrance world. They offer a first look at new releases before they officially launch, and they give me the chance to discover emerging brands, connect with perfumers, and experience innovations firsthand.

Do you have any future goals related to your passion like opening a boutique, writing a book, or starting a brand?
Definitely. I’m exploring the idea of launching a curated perfume concept—something that combines my knowledge, collection, and passion. A book might also be on the horizon, capturing stories behind iconic scents and personal milestones.

Do you think the Middle East has a unique influence or contribution to the global fragrance industry?
Without a doubt. The Middle East has a rich olfactory heritage, especially with ingredients like oud, amber, and rose. Our cultural connection to scent is deep and historic, and today, that influence is shaping global trends in perfumery.

Besides perfumes, do you have any other hobbies or passions that inspire you creatively?
Yes, photography became a passion of mine after getting into perfumes. It all started with wanting to capture my fragrances in the best possible way. Over time, I found myself falling in love with the art of photography itself from lighting and angles to storytelling through images. It’s now something I truly enjoy, and it goes hand in hand with my journey as a collector.
