Navigating the Unplanned Path to Becoming a News Anchor

Please introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello! I’m Zainab Fathi, I’m a news TV anchor in Kuwait’s official state television, and I’ve been in the field for over 13 years now. I also have two lovely children, Yousef and Mariam, and I like traveling and reading in my free time.

Tell us about your education.
I graduated from 6th of October University in Egypt, and my major was translation and languages with an emphasis in English and French.

What sparked your interest in the media and what led you to be a show host?
To be honest, I never planned to be a news anchor but after working for several years in the media, it sparked my interest and once I tried it, I realized that it was my hidden passion.

Why did you choose political shows and hosting who inspired you?
Although I love many shows I worked on, political shows always sparked my interest because they portray what’s happening around us and it’s important for all of us to be aware of what’s going on in the world, both locally and internationally. I’ve always been inspired by my fellow news anchors, and I make sure to listen to the valuable advice they give me, and internationally, I admire Barbra Walters and Christiane Amanpour.

What special preparations do you do before presenting a show?
I like doing some breathing exercises to ease the tension from being in front of the camera, I also make sure to drink something warm because the studio is usually very cold. Finally, I always go through the news after receiving as to avoid errors while being live on air.

Who has been your biggest mentor?
My father, may God rest his soul, has been my biggest mentor my whole life, and he was one of my biggest supporters.

What are some of the challenges you face as a Political Programs presenter?
As a Political Programs presenter, I face several challenges. One of the biggest challenges is staying neutral and objective while discussing sensitive political topics. It can be tricky to navigate the polarized nature of politics and ensure that I provide fair coverage to all sides. Additionally, keeping up with the fast-paced news cycle and staying well-informed on a wide range of political issues is a constant challenge.

How do you think social media has affected your field?
Social media has had a significant impact on the media industry, because of the way people consume their news now. On the one hand, it offers a platform that reaches wider audiences and allows them to engage with it. But on the other hand, there’s a lot of room for misinformation to spread, and that’s the official news outlets must be vigilant and on top of reporting of what’s happening in the world.

What’s the best piece of advice you have heard and repeat to others?
One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever heard and repeat to my children as well, is to stay true to yourself. Through working in the media, I’ve realized that it’s important to maintain your integrity and ethical standards.

What has been your proudest moment so far?
I’m very proud of all my accomplishments, especially the ones within the media field. Working in this field gave me the opportunity to moderate political happenings and make meaningful contributions to the field. Although, the moment I am most proud of was that I got to continue to practice what I love even during a global pandemic, it was an honor interviewing the many brave essential workers at that time, and to this day, I am grateful for everything they have done.

What are your plans for the future?
In the future, I plan to hone my skills as a presenter and journalist to train the upcoming youth and aspire to pass on my knowledge and expertise to them through training courses both virtual and in person.

How was 2023 for you in general?
2023 was an eventful year with its fair share of successes and challenges, just like any other year.

What are your goals for 2024?
In 2024, I aim to further expand my professional network and delve into more in-depth reporting. I’m also looking forward to utilizing social media and exploring new story telling formats where I can engage with my audience.

What are some of your other hobbies?
Outside of work, I have a passion for reading, especially in the genre of personal and professional development. I also love working out, specifically doing yoga. Finally, I like playing the piano when I feel like unwinding after a long day.

What is your favorite quote(s)?
One of my favorite quotes is by the motivational speaker, Louise Hay, who wrote many inspiring books, she once said “I do not fix problems. I fix my thinking. Then problems fix themselves.”

What is your beauty and fitness regime?
My beauty and fitness regime is all about balance, I make sure to stay active and I follow a well-balanced diet while practicing intermittent fasting as well. I also make sure to use natural products such as henna for my hair, and I also love Korean beauty products.

How do you unwind from your busy routine?
I unwind from my busy days, by spending time with my family, and by practicing any of my hobbies.

What is your favorite travel destination and why?
My favorite travel destination is a tie between Cairo, Egypt, and the Maldives. Cairo is a place where I can disconnect from my busy lifestyle and find joy through its’ simplicity and beauty. It also has a wide array of activities to do, whether it is to experience its’ rich culture near the pyramids of Giza or spend a night out with my best friends. Whereas the Maldives is where I can truly relax and meditate as much as I would like, its’ stunning landscapes and crystal-clear waters make it the perfect escape.

Your motto in life?
My motto in life is to let it go. It reminds me to approach every situation with an open mind, and not to dwell on things that have happened and that I no longer have control over.
