Please introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Maryam Bakhtiari. I started designing at the age of fifteen under the careful guidance of my mother. Later, I went to study at the prestigious Art University of Design in Tehran.
I’m a fashion designer, creative director, and couturier. I work in the famous luxury brand Abed Mahfouz as an art director and manager. I also work with local brands in UAE and GCC countries alongside Lebanon. I have been working in all fields of fashion for 14 years. I’ve been living in Dubai for 3 years now.
Tell us about your education.
My bachelor’s degree is in fashion and textile design. I’m also a master’s graduate in this field.
Moreover, I attended the Haute Couture course in Lebanon.
How and when did you get interested in fashion?
Since I was a child, I explored fashion and textiles and got interested. I always followed the Fashion TV channel. I learned basic design and sewing when I was 18 years old from my mother, who had a clothing atelier in Tehran.
My parents have always inspired me. They are the only ones who have always supported and motivated me to achieve my goals.
What does fashion mean to you?
Fashion is about showing your identity. It shows what choices you make, what type of person you are, and shows the world what you stand for. Fashion is a lifestyle for me.
How did you make your entry into the fashion industry? Where have you worked since you finished studying?
I have been working in the fashion industry for around 14 years. I have presented different collections. In 2017, I presented my own collection at Fashion Week Malaysia (Modest Fashion). I also worked in all the categories of fashion, such as cinema, theater, celebrities, etc.
I had my own brand called Maryam Bakhtiari in Tehran and UAE.
Can you remember your first photo shoot?
My first photoshoot was of my collection with a vintage concept inspired by the style of 1959.
When did you start working at Abed Mahfouz and how has the experience been?
I’ve been working with Abed Mahfouz since 2021 in Dubai and have presented different collections, like the 2024 Bridal Blossoms collection, which had a very good response.
He is a legend of fashion and creativity in haute couture, and I always use his experience. It was an honor for me to be a part of Abed Mahfouz Brand.
Currently, I work with this brand as the manager and art director.
What is the most important thing in your job as creative director?
The creative director is responsible for maintaining a cohesive visual and adds a magical touch to the projects.
It is the highest creative position in a fashion atelier; they advise the designers on overarching concepts for each collection and help guide the aesthetic vision of the brand.
Where do you go to get inspired?
I always take intangible inspirations from culture, art, history, movies, and nature.
How do you stay updated on the latest fashion trends?
I follow all the Fashion Week news, read fashion magazines, and explore celebrities’ styles, but mostly, fashion magazines have been a way to keep up with the latest trends for decades.
Your favourite quote(s)?
“Fashion is a state of mind, a soul.” “Fashion is more art than art is” “Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.”
What is the best advice you have been given and you pass on to orders?
My advice to all students is to find what you love and what makes you feel like you.
Always try to be different and creative.
What are some of your other hobbies?
My hobbies are updating my knowledge and gaining new information in this career and my own business. I want women to feel feminine, elegant, and sensual when they wear my designs.
How would you describe your personal style?
I think “personal style” is exactly what it sounds like —a personal way of dressing that is dictated by no one but yourself. I’d describe mine as feminine, classic, and chic.
What are your biggest achievements thus far?
I think goals should never be easy; they should force you to work. I’ve grown stronger through my experiences. Getting stronger brings me closer to my goals.
What is your fitness and beauty regime?
I have a set of food (diet) and exercises scheduled in my lifestyle.
When you are not working, what do you enjoy doing?
When I have free time, I like reading fashion magazines and books, learning more about my career, watching documentaries, cooking, travelling, and spending time with my family.
What could you never give up in your wardrobe? Why?
These items are necessary for each person or a fashion stylist in a wardrobe: a trench coat, a basic white shirt, a basic cotton Tee, a black blazer, dark blue denim, a cashmere sweater, white trainers, black heels, and black flats.
For me, I can never give up shoes and bags and accessories in my closet!
What are your plans for the future?
My future plans involve continuing to develop my skills and gain more experience in my current field. I am always looking for new opportunities to learn and grow, and I am open to new challenges and responsibilities.
