Experiencing the world-famous sunset in Santorini has always been on my bucket list, and I was lucky enough to travel to the beautiful Island and experience the sunset. The island is a part of the Cycladic group of islands in Greece. Santorini is best known for its charming towns perched atop cliffs, incredible views of the caldera (a large sunken volcanic crater dating back to an eruption in 1645 BC) and picturesque sunsets.
WHERE TO STAY:
There are beautiful cave hotels, houses in Oia, or Cycladic suites in Thira. We stayed in Thira for 4 nights in a Cycladic suite as it was central to the island and we could watch the sunset from our window. If you decide to stay in Oia which is the most famous town you should definitely try a cave house. You’ll want to select the accommodation depending on the view sea/sunset and the prices.
WHEN TO GO:
The best time to go is in the summer when the island is full of activity – during off season very few things are open. If you’re very limited on time and have multiple destinations planned 2-3 days is plenty.
WHAT TO DO:
Santorini is famous for its sailing cruises so we choose Daily Catamaran sailing cruise. They pick you up and drop you off to your hotel. We set sail from the port and sailed across the Red beach, White beach, had our first swimming stop at Mesa Pigadia cove where some hot springs were. Then we headed towards the Caldera of Santorini, a canvas that words can’t describe and is an ideal spot for pictures, meanwhile the crew prepares the food and drinks for everyone. The cruise trip ends with a beautiful sunset in the middle of the sea and heads back to the port.
Santorini has a romantic vibe and watching the sunset on top of the Caldera is one of the best things to do. In high tourist season its recommended to be there ahead of time since it gets crowded.
Santorini Cable car is a safe transport means from the old port to the Capital of Santorini Thira. The route takes only 3 minutes and while sitting in it you can admire the amazing view of the caldera, the sea and the volcano from a 220m altitude.
WHERE TO EAT:
Lauda (Oia) By far Oia’s most renowned fine dining restaurant! This meal was definitely a big splurge, but by far our best dinner in Santorini. The atmosphere is so romantic and every table has a gorgeous view of the caldera.
Dimitri’s Ammoudi Tavern (Oia) Super casual oceanside seafood restaurant that’s perfect for lunch. We had the yummiest seafood here! Dimitri’s is located along Oia’s famous Ammoudi Bay hundreds of steps below the town
WHERE TO TAKE PICTURES:
Santorini has photoshoot sessions that you can book via Airbnb experience or google to capture the beautiful memories on the island. The sessions vary depending on the number of sites and hours you decide to go for, you can always take pictures yourself and the photo spots in Santorini are –
