“The use of vibrant colour, playful elements, and the infusion of nature aims to create a positive and uplifting experience. If my art can bring joy and a sense of wonder to the audience, then I consider it a success”
Born in Beirut in 1983, Ihab Ahmad currently resides in Dubai, UAE. Having pursued a degree in Visual Communication Art at the Lebanese University, he founded the ‘Beirut Art Studio’ in 2016, serving as a creative sanctuary for both children and adults to delve into the world of art.
Ihab’s artistic expression is a manifestation of his childhood fantasies, providing an escape from reality into a realm of joy and amusement. His preferred medium involves playing with vibrant colors and fundamental shapes, a technique that defines his artistry. Nature serves as a profound muse for Ihab, influencing his creations that encompass elements like fish, eyes, trees, patterns, and geometric forms.
Renowned for his distinctive style, Ihab employs bright and lively colors to infuse energy into his works. Transforming simple imagery into intricate and whimsical shapes, along with a burst of colorful patterns, is a hallmark of his paintings. Ihab invites viewers to engage with his art on a personal level, encouraging them to interpret and assign their own meanings to the captivating pieces.
Through his artwork, Ihab Ahmad aims to transport viewers on a magical journey beyond the confines of colors and shapes, inviting them to explore the enchanting depths of his creative universe.
Ahmad sits down with José Berrocoso, our lifestyle editor, to delve into the narrative behind his artistic journey and the inspiration driving his paintbrush.
What inspired young Ihab Ahmad to pick up the paintbrush?
Since I was a kid I used to draw and paint without thinking about the results. it was a form of expression, especially since I was a quiet kid so I used to spend a lot of time drawing in class or at home. This passion for creating art stayed throughout my life but making it as a life career came later in my 30s. I went to university again and I studied visual communication art as a 2nd major, and since then I’m fully dedicating my time for my art.
How has your Lebanese heritage influenced your artistic vision and the themes you explore in your paintings?
My art is universal, I’ve never looked at it in a way that is limited to a place or a heritage, but as someone who lived most of his life in Lebanon for sure i was influenced with Lebanon culture and themes. Nature has always been my source of inspiration, and Lebanon is known for its beautiful biodiversity.
Could you elaborate on the techniques and colour palettes you prefer in your work? How do these choices contribute to the overall narrative of your pieces?
I love playing with colors and utilizing a bright and playful palette. The contrast between colors triggers the positive and happy vibes that I’d like to translate in my art. Techniques-wise, I often enjoy experimenting with new materials and tools. The way I do my art is very spontaneous. I don’t prepare a lot and I don’t think about it much. When I want to do a new art piece I picture what I want in my mind, usually without making a sketch. But when I start painting, ideas and images just flow naturally, and I put them directly on the canvas.
How has your artistic style evolved over the years, and are there particular artists or movements that have significantly impacted your work?
Over the years, my artistic style changed and evolved a lot, for example my color palette evolved into a more deliberate and thoughtful selection. Through extensive experimentation, I learned how to harmonize my color palette effectively. Also after studying visual communication art I was able to refine my understanding of color relationships. To mention that my style is still evolving, I always interpret things in different ways. The movements and artists that inspire me are many, such as the general contemporary movement with Keith Haring, the Cobra and the naive movement with Karel Appel and Jean Dubuffet.
Many artists infuse symbolism into their work. Are there recurring themes or symbols that hold personal significance in your paintings?
Nature has always been a significant source of inspiration for me. Birds, eyes, trees, and various shapes represent my unique interpretation of the wonders of nature. Each holds personal significance, contributing to the overall narrative of my pieces and creating a distinct visual language.
What challenges have you faced as an artist, and how have they influenced your growth and creative expression? On the flip side, what inspires you to keep creating?
The challenges are many, from the world crises in general to local support. However, these challenges have fueled my determination to use art as a powerful tool for positivity and resilience. The ability to contribute to meaningful causes and the unwavering support of the creative community inspire me to keep creating, even in challenging times.
How do you hope viewers interpret or connect with your art? Is there a particular emotion or message you aim to convey?
My ultimate goal is for viewers to feel happy when they engage with my art. The use of vibrant colour, playful elements, and the infusion of nature aims to create a positive and uplifting experience. If my art can bring joy and a sense of wonder to the audience, then I consider it a success.
Your work has been exhibited in several galleries and art fairs from Beirut to Italy, France, Netherlands, UAE, USA… Are there any upcoming projects or exhibitions that you’re particularly excited about? Could you give us a glimpse into what the future holds for your artistic endeavors?
The past December I participated in Art Miami, it was one of the most exciting art fairs that I’ve participated in. I’ve also did a beautiful collaboration with a restaurant – Roadster for a campaign that holds a very wise cause- supporting “Embrace” a mental health NGO. I will have other art fairs next year, and I’m also working on a very exciting collaboration that will be launched around February March.
What advice would you offer to emerging artists who aspire to pursue a career in the art world, especially those with a cultural background similar to yours?
My advice is to believe in yourself, dream big and stay true to your unique touch.
