Reimagining Tradition for the Woman of Today
With an illustrious career that spans over three decades, Manish Malhotra remains one of the most influential voices in Indian fashion. Renowned for blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary allure, his creations have graced cinema screens, global runways, and red carpets around the world. In an exciting new chapter, Malhotra now ventures into the realm of Ready-to-Wear presenting a collection that redefines everyday luxury.
Seamlessly marrying structured tailoring with fluid drapery, this line is a tribute to the modern woman: powerful, elegant, and unapologetically herself. From embellished sarees to versatile kurtas, each piece exudes quiet glamour and effortless sophistication. In this exclusive conversation with CP Magazine, the designer reflects on his creative evolution, the ethos behind his Ready-to-Wear debut, and his deep connection to craftsmanship and storytelling. With a keen eye on global trends and a heart rooted in tradition, Manish Malhotra continues to dress not just women but the moments that define them.

Your journey in fashion has spanned decades, how do you continue to evolve creatively while staying true to your signature aesthetic?
Fashion has always been a personal journey for me. It has never just been about clothes, but about emotion, memory, and a deep connection to our culture. Over the years, what has kept me creatively alive is this constant curiosity to explore, to learn, and to push the boundaries of what Indian couture can be.
My aesthetic has always been rooted in a celebration of Indian craftsmanship, cinematic grandeur, and an unapologetic embrace of beauty. I don’t stray from that foundation. Instead, I choose to excavate its deeper layers to explore how tradition can converse with contemporaneity without compromise.
The world of fashion is in perpetual motion. Cultural sensibilities shift, technology redefines expression, and audiences evolve in their perception of luxury and legacy. To remain creatively relevant, I believe one must possess both intellectual agility and emotional clarity. You must observe with curiosity and design with intention.
Cinema has always been my first love, and it continues to inspire me. Storytelling is at the heart of everything I do. Whether it’s a sequin saree or a bridal lehenga, I always ask: what’s the story here, what’s the emotion? For me, creativity comes from the dialogue between what has been and what can be. It’s not about reinvention for the sake of change, but about refinement and about reimagining the familiar in a way that feels new, relevant, and deeply personal. That is where the magic lies.
What initially inspired you to transition from couture to launching your first Ready-to-Wear collection?
The transition from couture to ready-to-wear was not a departure, but an expansion of my creative philosophy. Couture will always be my first love. The craftsmanship, the intricacy, the deeply personal nature of it. But I have always believed that fashion should also be democratic a part of everyday expression, not reserved solely for monumental moments.
Launching ready-to-wear was about distilling the essence of my aesthetic, the elegance, the emotion into silhouettes that could move fluidly through modern life. It was driven by a deep desire to connect with a wider audience while preserving the integrity and intention behind every design.
In a world where fashion is constantly evolving, I wanted to offer pieces that allow people to inhabit luxury on their own terms. For me, it was less a shift and more an evolution, a natural progression towards accessibility without compromise.
How would you define “effortless glamour” in the context of today’s fashion landscape?
Effortless glamour, to me, is the art of making a statement with subtlety and grace. It’s elegance that feels intuitive rather than imposed. In today’s fashion narrative, it’s about authenticity, fluidity, and presence, style that reflects who you are without ever needing to announce itself.
Take, for instance, the signature sequin saree. It shimmers, but never shouts. Its allure lies in how it moves with the body, how it catches the light, how it transforms the traditional into something impossibly modern and wearable. It embodies that perfect intersection of ease and impact.
It’s about restraint with refinement, where every element feels considered yet natural. When craftsmanship meets confidence, that is where true glamour lives quietly powerful, endlessly relevant, and unmistakably personal.

What are the key elements that differentiate your Ready-to-Wear line from your couture collections?
I would say the key difference lies in their purpose and accessibility. Couture is an intimate celebration of craftsmanship, each piece individually handcrafted and designed to tell a unique story for extraordinary moments. It’s art in its purest form, where every detail is meticulously perfected.
Ready-to-Wear, on the other hand, distils that same artistry into pieces designed for the rhythm of everyday life. It prioritises versatility, comfort, and ease without sacrificing elegance. The silhouettes are more fluid, the designs more adaptable, allowing modern individuals to express luxury in a practical, effortless way.
Both lines share a common thread, a commitment to quality, emotion, and heritage. But Ready-to-Wear embraces the contemporary pace, offering a new way to experience my aesthetic luxury that moves with you every day.
Structured tailoring and fluid drapery are both featured prominently. How did you approach integrating these seemingly contrasting elements?
Structured tailoring and fluid drapery have always been an integral part of my design ethos. I’ve never seen them as opposing forces; rather, I see them as two expressions of the same story. That duality has defined so much of my work over the years.
With the Ready-to-Wear collection, I wanted to bring that philosophy into everyday dressing where a sharply tailored blazer could stand alongside a fluid saree drape, and both could speak of ease, elegance, and empowerment.
When I made my debut at the Met Gala and the theme was “Dandy,” it felt incredibly aligned with how I approach design. It was a chance to express that same contrast bold structure and graceful movement on a global stage. Creating four distinct looks that celebrated that spirit felt instinctive. It wasn’t about costume; it was about character.
Whether it’s couture or ready-to-wear, India or international, my design language is always about balance. It’s about finding that quiet space where everything just comes together.
How important is fabric selection in achieving the sense of ease and refinement that defines this collection?
Fabric selection is absolutely fundamental to achieving the ease and refinement that define this collection. For me, it’s not just a technical step, it’s a deeply personal experience. I spend hours with my team at the atelier, feeling each fabric, imagining how it will move, how it will drape on the body, how it will translate my vision into reality.
I truly believe that the quality of fabric is the very foundation of every garment. It dictates not only how the piece looks, but how it feels against the skin, how it breathes, and how it allows the wearer to feel confident and comfortable.
I look for fabrics that have natural fluidity but can also hold structure when needed, because balance is everything. Each thread, each weave, carries meaning. It’s through this intimate process that we achieve that perfect harmony between effortless ease and timeless elegance. For me, fabric truly breathes life into design and brings emotion to form.

You’ve often worked with celebrities and film. How does this collection translate the cinematic into the everyday?
Working with cinema and celebrities has shaped the way I see fashion. It’s never just about the clothes. For me, it has always been a form of storytelling. There’s a certain emotion, a drama in film that stays with you. It’s not always loud or obvious. Sometimes it’s just a glance, a moment, something intangible. And that’s what I try to bring into my collections.
With this one, the idea was to carry that cinematic spirit into everyday life. Not with overt extravagance, but with subtle gestures – a silhouette, a texture, the way a fabric moves. It’s about suggesting a story without needing to spell it out. Letting the pieces speak softly, yet powerfully. I want the wearer to feel that quiet sense of grandeur, something that hints at more, while still feeling completely at ease.
What are the wardrobe staples you believe every woman should own from this new collection?
When I think about the wardrobe staples every woman should have from this collection, it comes down to pieces that make her feel powerful yet comfortable because style should never be a compromise.
The blazer is a no-brainer. It’s sharp, it’s strong, but it moves with you. Whether stepping into a meeting or heading out later, it gives an instant confidence boost.
Then, of course, the saree. I’ve always loved the saree, it’s such an iconic piece of Indian fashion. Here, it’s reimagined: modern, with just the right amount of embellishment to feel special, but still easy to wear. It’s for the woman who wants to honour tradition while living in the now.
I also love the kurtas in this collection. They’re elegant yet effortless something you can wear all day and still feel glamorous. Because who says you have to wait for a special occasion to dress beautifully?
For me, these pieces aren’t just clothes. They’re part of a woman’s story, her strength, her elegance, her rhythm. When she wears them, she doesn’t have to think twice. That’s what I wanted to create: fashion that’s instinctive, empowering, and truly modern.
Sustainability is a growing focus in fashion, how is that reflected in this collection, if at all?
Sustainability in fashion is such an important conversation right now. For me, it’s about more than just materials or processes. It’s about respecting the entire journey of what we create, from the hands that craft it to the stories it carries forward.
In this collection, you’ll see a balance between heritage and innovation. I deeply believe in honouring the artisans whose incredible skills have been passed down through generations. Their craftsmanship is the soul of what I do. When we support and nurture these traditions, we’re preserving something far greater than a single garment, we’re preserving a legacy.
While the collection may not shout sustainability in the loudest way, it reflects a commitment to meaningful progress. It’s about thoughtful design, investing in quality, and creating pieces that women will cherish and wear for years. Because to me, true sustainability is about creating with intention, so fashion continues to inspire not just now, but for generations to come.

How does the Ready-to-Wear line allow you to connect with a wider and perhaps younger audience?
The Ready-to-Wear line is designed to connect with anyone and everyone who values style that is both elegant and accessible. It’s about creating pieces that move seamlessly with life, whether you’re navigating a busy day or enjoying special moments.
This collection blends tradition with a modern spirit, offering versatility and comfort without ever compromising on sophistication. It invites people from all walks of life to experience a sense of confidence and grace through clothing that feels effortless yet refined.
By reimagining classic elements in fresh, adaptable ways, the line speaks to a wide audience, those who appreciate craftsmanship, but also want fashion that fits their unique rhythm and lifestyle. Ultimately, Ready-to-Wear is for anyone who embraces style as an expression of self. Wherever they are, and whatever their story.
The Middle East has a deep appreciation for luxury and craft. How do you see your Ready-to-Wear collection resonating with fashion-conscious audiences in this region?
The Middle East has always had a profound connection with luxury, detail, and heritage, values that are at the heart of my design philosophy. My Ready-to-Wear collection carries forward the soul of Indian craftsmanship, but presents it in a way that speaks to the modern, global woman. The embroidery, the textiles, the silhouettes, they all come from a place of tradition, but they are styled with a sense of ease and versatility that resonates deeply with fashion-conscious audiences in the region. What I find truly inspiring about the Middle East is the appreciation for individuality and statement dressing. This collection is designed for someone who values artistry but also wants it to feel effortless. Whether it’s a fluid drape or a sharply tailored ensemble, it allows the wearer to express elegance in her own unique way. It’s not just about wearing a garment. It’s about connecting with something timeless, something crafted with emotion. And that sentiment, I believe, finds a very natural home in the Middle East.

Do you see a future boutique or expansion of the Ready-to-Wear line in Kuwait or the broader GCC?
Well, never say never! The response to our first international flagship in Dubai has been truly overwhelming. It’s such a dynamic and fashion-forward region. The GCC has always had a deep appreciation for couture and craftsmanship, which resonates so beautifully with what we do. Kuwait? Who knows, maybe it’ll be the second! Let’s just say, the possibilities are always being stitched behind the scenes.
