“Where timeless elegance meets bold individuality, designed for the modern woman.”
Can you start by introducing yourself and telling us a bit about your background?
I’m Orlagh Louise McLaughlin, originally from Northern Ireland, and I’ve had the pleasure of residing in the Middle East for over 12 years. As a relatively new face in the fashion design world, my journey has been shaped by a dynamic blend of experiences in retail, the arts, communications, and luxury travel. I pursued studies in Media Arts with a focus on Publishing in Belfast, where I also took a few evening courses in fashion design, allowing me to immerse myself in the creative world that has always inspired me. Fashion, for me, is not just an industry; it’s an art form—a way of storytelling through design, culture, and identity.
How did your interest in fashion and design first develop?
My passion for fashion and design began at an early age. I would rush home from school, eager to tune into Fashion TV, captivated by the glamorous world it presented. Passing enormous fashion billboards on the roads felt like glimpses into a world I longed to be part of, and I would devour every Vogue editorial spread, analyzing each shot for its elegance and story. I began sketching clothes and runway scenes as a child, dreaming up designs and crafting outfits for my Barbie dolls. In fact, I once even cut up my mother’s Italian lace wedding dress to create a couture gown for Barbie—an audacious (and slightly scandalous) moment that only deepened my love for fashion.
Could you tell us about your educational background in design or fashion?
Although I didn’t formally graduate in fashion design, I possess a keen eye and a dedicated focus that have driven me to learn independently and cultivate my craft. Many of the skills I’ve developed are self-taught, honed through a commitment to continuous learning and an unyielding passion for the art of fashion. This self-guided journey has allowed me to explore the industry with fresh perspectives and a unique approach to design.
What inspired you to start your own brand, ORLOUI?
My journey into fashion began with a lifelong dream to become a designer. The brand name, ORLOUI, has been part of my creative vision for years—a name scribbled in countless notebooks filled with ideas. Seeing it transform from a dream into a tangible collection is incredibly fulfilling. My designs, which feature abayas and kaftans, are crafted to embody strength, resilience, and elegance—qualities I hold dear and strive to reflect. My aim is to inspire women to feel beautiful and confident in garments made from top-quality fabrics and carefully tailored silhouettes that complement every woman’s unique beauty.
How has being based in Qatar and the UAE influenced your brand’s identity?
Being based in the Middle East for over a decade, particularly in Qatar and the UAE, has infused my brand, ORLOUI, with a unique blend of vibrancy and elegance. The region’s rich, magical culture and calm sophistication reflect both my personality and personal style, which I aim to channel into each design. For my first few clothing collections, I chose to design a series of abayas. Even though I am not Middle Eastern, I have a deep love for this beautiful garment and often dress in abayas myself. My work is inspired by the contrast between the UAE’s bold modernity and Qatar’s timeless traditions, alongside influences from other countries I’ve had the privilege to experience. This melting pot of cultures enriches ORLOUI’s identity, merging classic elegance with contemporary innovation to create pieces that feel both timeless and fresh.
What was your career path like before launching ORLOUI?
Before launching ORLOUI, my career journey was rooted in the world of luxury travel, where I served as a VIP flight attendant, catering to the needs of some of the world’s most elite and prominent individuals. This role allowed me to gain a deep understanding of refined aesthetics, exclusivity, and personalized service—all essential elements that I now bring to my brand. Additionally, I worked in lifestyle management and as a personal assistant to ultra-high-net-worth clients, where I honed my eye for detail and developed a keen sense of sophistication and quality. These experiences laid the foundation for ORLOUI, shaping its commitment to luxury, artistry, and an exceptional level of care in every piece.
When did you decide it was the right time to start your own brand?
The decision to start my own brand, ORLOUI, felt like a natural evolution rather than a single moment. After years immersed in the luxury world and observing the nuances of high-end design and service, I reached a point where my passion for fashion and creativity demanded its own expression. I realized that I had a vision to share—a blend of elegance, artistry, and sustainability inspired by my experiences and the places I’ve lived. It was the right time to take that leap and bring ORLOUI to life, creating a brand that reflects both my personal journey and a unique aesthetic for today’s discerning woman.
What is the meaning or story behind the name ORLOUI?
The name ORLOUI was created by partially combining my first two names, Orlagh and Louise. Orlagh means “golden ruler” or “golden princess,” and it has Irish and Celtic roots. Louise is the feminine form of Louis, meaning “renowned warrior.” Together, ORLOUI represents a “golden warrior,” symbolizing strength, elegance, and a sense of empowerment.
How would you describe ORLOUI’s design style and philosophy?
ORLOUI’s design style and philosophy are rooted in a celebration of timeless femininity, individuality, and cultural richness. Each piece is crafted with the adventurous, bold woman in mind—someone who values elegance, creativity, and the confidence to stand apart. Inspired by my global travels and diverse experiences, ORLOUI blends luxury with artistry, infusing a unique cultural narrative into every design. Our range, from statement custom-made abayas and kaftans to an upcoming series of dresses, speaks a language of empowerment and self-expression, honoring both the beauty of the world and the spirit of the women who wear it.
Who do you envision as the ideal ORLOUI customer?
The ideal ORLOUI customer is a confident, sophisticated woman who values artistry and self-expression. A global-minded explorer, she embraces timeless elegance and bold femininity, choosing pieces that tell a story and reflect her unique spirit. ORLOUI is for the woman who lives fully, stands out effortlessly, and seeks beauty with meaning.
Where do you draw inspiration from for your collections?
I draw inspiration from the vibrant cultures, landscapes, and experiences gathered through my travels. Each collection reflects a fusion of art, architecture, and natural beauty from around the world, paired with the elegance and strength of the women I envision wearing ORLOUI. I’m inspired by the rich textures, colors, and stories of different places I’ve been fortunate to see, weaving these elements into designs that celebrate individuality and timeless femininity.
What’s the most challenging part of being a designer and running your own brand?
The most challenging part of being a designer and running my own brand is balancing creativity with the practical aspects of business. While the design process itself is deeply fulfilling, managing logistics, production, and the growing demands of the brand requires constant focus and adaptability. Ensuring that every piece aligns with my vision while maintaining the quality and sustainability standards I set for ORLOUI can be a delicate challenge, but it’s all part of the journey toward creating something truly unique.
How do you incorporate Middle Eastern influences into your designs?
I incorporate Middle Eastern influences into my designs by embracing the region’s deep cultural symbolism and luxurious materials. From the delicate art of calligraphy—both Middle Eastern and Irish—to the intricate detailing seen in traditional garments, I draw on the region’s rich heritage while infusing a modern, global sensibility. The contrast between bold architectural lines and flowing, organic forms often inspires my silhouettes, creating a fusion that feels both timeless and forward-thinking.
How do you decide on materials and fabrics for your designs?
I take a hands-on approach to selecting materials and fabrics, personally visiting factories in different parts of the world—such as India, Italy, and Japan—to ensure the highest quality and craftsmanship. For my first collection, I hand-sourced fabrics locally in Qatar, drawing inspiration from the region’s textures and colors. For my second series, I had the privilege of selecting fabrics in India earlier this year, where I immersed myself in the vibrant markets and artisanal craftsmanship. This direct involvement allows me to choose fabrics that align with my design vision, feel comfortable on the skin, and carry a sense of cultural connection and authenticity.
Are there any key values or principles that you follow in your design work?
In my design work, I prioritize authenticity, sustainability, and timeless elegance. I believe in creating pieces that tell a story, reflecting both personal and cultural narratives. Sustainability is key, as I aim to minimize environmental impact through careful material selection and mindful production practices. Above all, I strive to design with purpose—crafting garments that empower women, celebrate individuality, and endure beyond fleeting trends.
How has social media, particularly Instagram, influenced your brand’s growth?
Social media, particularly Instagram, has been instrumental in accelerating ORLOUI’s growth by providing a platform to showcase the brand’s narrative and connect directly with a global audience. It allows me to visually communicate our designs, ethos, and the stories behind each collection in real time, fostering an engaged community of followers. Instagram has also enabled us to build meaningful relationships with influencers, stylists, and fashion enthusiasts, creating organic buzz and increasing brand visibility. By strategically leveraging the platform to highlight both the artistry of our pieces and the values we stand for, we’ve been able to generate a loyal customer base and expand our reach internationally.
How do you manage to keep your designs fresh and innovative season after season?
I stay ahead by constantly seeking inspiration from diverse cultures, new experiences, and emerging trends while staying true to ORLOUI’s core values. Regularly engaging with my global network and revisiting past collections helps me refine and evolve designs, ensuring each season offers something fresh, innovative, and aligned with my brand’s vision.
Are there any designers or fashion icons who have influenced your work?
In a previous interview, I mentioned Alexander McQueen as a major influence, particularly his ability to blend dark romance with technical precision and his fearless approach to design. Additionally, I draw inspiration from designers like Stella McCartney, whose commitment to sustainability resonates with my own values, and Jean-Paul Gaultier for his boldness in challenging fashion norms. These icons have deeply shaped my approach, pushing me to embrace creativity, innovation, and a strong sense of individuality in my work.
What has been one of your proudest moments as a designer so far?
One of my proudest moments as a designer was creating an exclusive, limited-edition collection for a special Breast Cancer Awareness event in Doha this October, organized by La Difference PR and hosted at the Waldorf Astoria Doha City. It was incredibly meaningful to contribute to such a significant cause while showcasing the craftsmanship and ethos of ORLOUI in a way that resonated with both the community and the guests. Being part of an event that raised awareness and supported such an important initiative was truly an unforgettable milestone for me and for ORLOUI.
Outside of work, how do you like to spend your free time?
Outside of work, I enjoy a variety of activities that allow me to unwind and stay inspired. I love traveling, which fuels both my creativity and sense of adventure. Sketching is a favorite pastime, helping me explore new design ideas. I also enjoy playing padel and horse riding, which keep me active and grounded. Additionally, I value spending quality time with my family and friends, and I’m always eager to attend events in the creative and innovative technology industries, where I can connect with like-minded individuals and stay on top of emerging trends.
