Designing Dreams, Playing Emotions
Can you please introduce yourself?
My name is Yasaman. I was born in 1993 in Tehran, Iran. I work as a Handpan player, architect, and model, and I am currently based between Dubai and Iran.
What brought you to Dubai, and how has your journey been so far?
I initially came to Dubai for Handpan performances and modelling opportunities. Before that, I had visited for leisure. Dubai provides a more dynamic and convenient working environment, offering great career prospects. So far, my journey has been exciting, and I am grateful for the opportunities I have found here.
As an architect, what inspires your design philosophy?
I am deeply inspired by minimalism and the creation of unique pieces where every aesthetic detail is carefully considered. Simplicity and functionality play a major role in my design approach.
How did you get into playing the Handpan, and what does it mean to you?
About seven years ago, I heard the sound of the Handpan for the first time, and I was instantly captivated. I began learning to play, and it completely transformed my life. The Handpan’s calming frequencies are unlike any other instrument. For me, playing it is more than just music—it is a way of life. Each note resonates with both energy and tranquility.
Can you share the story behind Meene Studio and what inspired its creation?
After earning my Master’s degree in architecture, my friends and I, who shared a similar design philosophy, decided to establish Meene Studio. Our aim was to create minimalist, thoughtful designs. The name “Meene” is derived from “minimal,” reflecting our core aesthetic.
What is your proudest achievement so far in your career?
In the Handpan field, my proudest moment was performing at venues I truly admire and sharing positive energy with the audience. In architecture, my first project with my friends at Meene Studio was an incredibly rewarding professional milestone.
How do architecture and music intersect in your creative process?
Both architecture and music are forms of artistic expression, and they help me convey my ideas—whether through sound or visual elements. These disciplines have broadened my perspective and enhanced my creativity.
What challenges have you faced in your journey, and how did you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges I have faced is loneliness and being away from my loved ones. Over time, I built new friendships in Dubai, which made the transition easier. I also travel frequently between Iran and Dubai, which helps me stay connected to home.
What does a typical day in your life look like?
My day usually starts with Handpan practice, yoga, and a workout. Depending on the schedule, I focus on Handpan performances, architectural projects, or modelling shoots. I also dedicate time to managing my social media presence.
What are your favourite places in Dubai that inspire you?
I love spending time by the beach because nature is a great source of peace for me. That’s why my favourite places in Dubai are those along the coastline.
If you could collaborate with any artist, architect, or musician, who would it be and why?
In the Handpan field, I would love to collaborate with creative musicians, whether in the Handpan community or electronic music. Such collaborations would help me grow as an artist. I also dream of working with vocalists to create something truly unique.
Do you have a personal motto or philosophy that guides you in life?
I always strive to follow my heart and live in the present moment. These two principles are essential to me, especially in a world where nothing is predictable.
What’s one of the best pieces of advice you’ve ever received?
“Don’t focus on limitations—keep moving forward.”
Can you share a memorable moment from your journey—either in architecture or music?
One of my most memorable moments in music was being invited to perform at a venue I had always admired in Dubai. In architecture, my first collaborative project with my friends at Meene Studio was truly special, filled with creativity and unforgettable experiences.
What do you hope people feel when they experience your music?
I hope my music brings people a sense of calm and positive energy. Many listeners have told me they felt lighter and more peaceful after my performances, which means the world to me.
What are your future plans for Meene Studio and your personal projects?
I am currently working on an album for my Handpan music. As for Meene Studio, my team and I are planning to expand our presence and projects in Dubai.
Do you have a favourite quote that resonates with you?
One of my favourite quotes is from Rumi:
“Thousands of doors are open to you, If you recognise yourself in the moment.”
Another favourite is by Mies van der Rohe:
“Less is more.”
What hobbies or activities do you enjoy outside of architecture and music?
I am passionate about sports and enjoy reading philosophical and psychological books.
How do you balance your creative passions with daily life?
Both architecture and music naturally integrate into my daily life because they are not just professions—they are passions. This makes balancing them feel effortless.
